Maine 2010

Yesterday Chris & I returned back from a wonderful trip to the East Coast. I can tell you this - the weather in Maine is much better than the weather in Washington right now! What a surprise when we got off the plane!

Unfortunately, Chris' Grandmother passed away in October and we had to make a trip back East for the funeral. It was under very unfortunate circumstances we had to go back, but we tried our best to relax, have some fun and take advantage of the opportunity to hang out with his family (some of who I've never met!)
We took a red eye out early Wednesday morning and arrived (in a daze) in Boston late morning on Wednesday. After collecting the rental car we pointed North and started to drive (thank you inventor of the GPS).
The drive was pretty quick -

First we passed through New Hampshire

And then it started raining - really really raining!
I tried to get a picture at the Maine state line - but I got a whole lot of rain and a blurry photo instead.

We took the long way up to Brunswick (our first stop) and stopped in Ogunquit on the coast for a bit. It's a rare treat to get to see the Atlantic Ocean!

As we continued to drive we watched the sunset, but this one was a bit different. There was a rainbow from the downpouring rains, but the rainbow was actually part of the sunset. It was the oddest thing - this photo is blurry, but still cool.

We finally made it to Brunswick Naval Airstation and tucked in for the night - it was a long day traveling from the West! The next morning we headed out to Farmington to meet up with Chris' family. After we went out to Buckfield and had a wonderful dinner with Chris' friends Rick and Tricia (Rick was in our wedding). Thanks guys for puting up with us overnight! We'll be back after March to meet the newest Dunton :)
Friday morning we were up early again and on the road - headed out to Rangeley this morning to stay at Chris' family's camp (or cabin for us west-coasters :). There was just barely a dusting of snow on the way up there. We stopped at a view point called "Height of the Land" for an amazing view of Mooselookmeguntic Lake (say that three times fast), you could even see New Hampshire from there!
We finally arrived at Camp. It was a beautiful day to be there (actually, every day is a beautiful day to be there).

Chris quickly adapted back into his native Maine habitat.

Saturday was Chris' Grandma's service and it was a great way to honor a great life. Many stories were told with laughter and smiles, just how she would've liked it. I managed to get a photo of us all together, got to take advantage of our time together.

Another positive thing to making the trip back to Maine - we got to meet his cousin's new baby. Owen Forrest Walker was born a month ago and is quite the cute little boy!

Sunday morning Dave took me "moosing" to try to find a moose (my goal each trip to Maine). I think I am natural moose repellent.... My past few trips to Maine have been very unsuccessful in the moose department and this one was no exception. We woke up at 5:30 so we could be out on the road by sunrise. Dave drove me all over the place for hours on dirt roads and the only moose we saw was just a few miles down the road from Camp. However, we did get to see a spectacular sunrise and Dave taught me the basics of how to spot moose (we saw tracks and signs the bull moose was nearby). A very nice adventure - despite the lack of moose.

Good morning Maine -

Smalls Falls -

Sunrise over the river -

My moosing buddy -

The last stop of the trip was a quick one in Portland. Main goal - a lobster roll. I had to get my fill of lobster while I was in New England - it was a must!

We walked around Portland a bit to enjoy the view -

Before a tasty lunch of lobster roll. Yum.

We had an uneventful trip home. Actually, we were completely astonished that every person we interacted with from the hotel in Boston to the airport in Seattle was incredibly friendly and nice. Funny story though - we had a layover in Salt Lake City and actually ran into Matt Hagen and his wife - our photographer from our wedding! They were on the same flight back into Seattle. It was fun to catch up and helped pass time on the layover. Luckily we made it back right before the weather got real bad. There was a definite grumbling on the plane when the pilot announced it was snowing in Seattle! Made for a nice pretty white view while landing.

Happy early Thanksgiving everyone!! Enjoy your time with family! (We'll miss you Halls - see you over Christmas!!)

Glad you had a good trip despite the circumstances. We squeaked that trip to the airport for pickup right in under the (snow) wire.

Welcome home!
